SERPCompass

Three kinds of tool, and one gap between them.

Search tooling has split into three camps, and each one is genuinely good at its own job. The gap is that none of them covers the whole loop at a price a single small business can carry, without first asking that business to configure it. That gap is what SERPCompass is.

What each camp does well, and where it stops

Written the way we'd explain it to a friend choosing a tool, including the cases where the honest answer is "buy the other one".

The established SEO suites

Deepest data

Strong at: enormous historical keyword and backlink databases, mature crawlers, and a decade of refinement. If you need the largest possible link index or deep historical trend data for a competitive enterprise market, this is what to buy — genuinely, we'd tell you the same on a call.

Where it stops: the pricing model. Entry plans are built for a company with a dedicated SEO hire, seats are commonly billed individually, and AI-answer visibility tends to arrive as a separately priced module rather than part of the core. For one small business with no SEO hire, the total lands well beyond what the site can support.

The AI-visibility natives

Newest category

Strong at: tracking how brands appear in AI assistant answers, with prompt-level detail, citation analysis and sentiment. Purpose-built and moving fast. If AI visibility is genuinely your only question, a specialist will go deeper than we do.

Where it stops: they generally don't do core SEO at all — no crawler, no site audit, no rank tracking. So they sit alongside a second subscription rather than replacing one, and the two never share an evidence trail. You end up reconciling them by hand, which is the problem you were trying to solve.

The budget keyword tools

Most affordable

Strong at: fast keyword lookups at a genuinely low price, with clean interfaces. Good for a solo site owner doing occasional research who doesn't need an operating system.

Where it stops: depth and continuity. Typically no serious site audit, and no path from a finding to work someone can actually execute. They answer a question; they don't run a process.

SERPCompass

Where we fit

Strong at: covering the whole loop — classic SEO and AI-answer visibility, sharing one evidence trail, for one website at a flat price. You give us the address; we work out the rest. Unlimited seats, no credits, and every finding traceable to the run that produced it.

Where it stops: we're honest about this. Our link index is built from open crawl data, so it's less complete and less fresh than a dedicated backlink vendor's. We report relative demand and ranges rather than absolute monthly search volume, because that figure isn't available from open sources. If those specific numbers are the centre of your workflow, a suite will serve you better, and we'd rather you knew now than after a renewal.

The differences that show up on the invoice

Feature lists converge over time. Packaging decisions are where tools really differ, and they're what you feel every month.

The market column describes patterns common across the category, not any single named product. Vendor pricing and packaging change frequently — always check a specific tool's current terms before deciding.

When you should not pick us

A tool that claims to win every comparison isn't telling you anything. Here are the cases where we're the wrong choice.

  • You need the largest link index that existsOpen crawl data is real and verified, but a dedicated backlink vendor's index is more complete and fresher. If link prospecting at scale is your core workflow, buy the specialist.
  • You need absolute search volume you can quoteThat precise monthly number isn't obtainable from open sources. We publish relative demand and ranges instead. If a client contract requires a specific vendor's volume figure, you need that vendor.
  • You need years of historical trend data on day oneYour workspace's history starts when you start. We can read your Search Console history, but we can't retroactively produce competitor data from before you joined.
  • You only care about AI answersIf classic search is genuinely irrelevant to you, a pure AI-visibility specialist will go deeper on prompt-level analysis than we will.
