We built the tool we needed, then opened it up.
SERPCompass started inside FlowDesk, our own agency, because the tools we were paying for told us what happened and left the hardest part — deciding what to do next — entirely to us.
Our story
The problem we kept hitting
Running search work for clients, we had no shortage of data. We had rank trackers, crawlers, keyword tools and analytics dashboards. What we didn't have was a straight line from "here is a number that moved" to "here is the work that should happen this week, and here is why."
Every month, the same ritual: export from four tools, reconcile numbers that disagreed, rebuild the same slide, and make the actual judgement call from memory and instinct. The tools got more expensive each renewal. The judgement stayed manual.
Then the ground moved
People started asking assistants instead of typing queries. Suddenly a brand could be doing everything right in classic search and still be invisible where a growing share of decisions were being made. The established suites treated this as an add-on to sell, a separate line item, often costing more than the plan it attached to. The new AI-visibility tools treated it as the whole product, and ignored the core SEO work that still drives most of the traffic.
Neither shape matched the reality of running a site. You need both, and you need them in the same place, because they inform each other.
What we decided to build
A continuous system rather than a reporting tool. Something that keeps hunting for opportunities, ranks them by what they're plausibly worth, turns the chosen one into work someone can actually do, and then checks the result against your own data instead of a vanity score.
And crucially: something that could be affordable enough for a small business or an agency's smallest client. That constraint shaped the engineering more than anything else.
The engineering decision underneath the price
Most search suites are, commercially, a reseller relationship. They license a large third-party dataset and price that contract into every subscription. It's a reasonable model, and it sets a floor on what they can charge.
We went the other way and built on open sources and the free APIs you already own — your Search Console, open web-crawl data, multiple independent search sources fused into one consensus result. It was substantially more work to build, and it comes with real limits we publish rather than hide. But it means the price reflects the product, not a licence fee, and it means every workspace's data compounds into something we own together rather than rent.
What we won't do
We won't charge per seat — inviting a colleague or a client shouldn't cost money. We won't sell you credits you have to budget against. We won't put your AI search visibility behind a premium tier, because it's the point. And we won't quote a confident number we can't stand behind: where a figure is modelled, the product says so, on the number itself.
We also don't promise rankings. Nobody can. What we promise is that you'll know what changed, what you did, and whether the two look connected.
Four principles that decide our arguments
When we disagree internally about a feature, these are what we appeal to. They're also the fastest way to predict what we'll build next.
- Evidence over scoresA single number that grades your site is easy to build and impossible to act on. Show the finding, the source, and what it implies.
- Measurement is the beginningKnowing you have a problem is table stakes. The value is in the ranked, specific, executable fix.
- Honest limits build trustPublishing what our data can't tell you costs us a sales talking point and earns something worth more.
- Pricing should be legibleYou should be able to predict next month's invoice without a calculator or a call.
SERPCompass is a FlowDesk product
FlowDesk is a working search and growth agency. SERPCompass runs our own client work every week, which means the roadmap is decided by what actually slows us down.
- We use it dailyEvery module ships because a real client engagement needed it. Nothing is built for a feature matrix.
- We ship the fix tooFlowDesk offers done-for-you implementation, so we see whether the recommendations actually work.
